I’ve been scouring the business opportunity magazines and Internet sites for terrific headlines. It was my plan to take these headlines and retool them to fit my particular endeavors. But a funny thing happened on the way to the retooling shop.

I noticed a recurring theme. One that I didn’t like. I call it the “Prey Parting” headline. It reads like this:

HOMEWORKERS URGENTLY NEEDED!

or it might say:

WOULD YOU LIKE TO MAKE $363.00 NEXT WEEK AND EVERY WEEK?

The sub head always says something to the effect:

No Selling
No Experience Required
No Personal Contact
No Cold Calling
etc., etc., etc.

The text always reads: Assemble products in your home at your own pace; Stuff envelopes in the privacy of your home; Make $500 next week following our simple directions; You have come to the right source to begin making the kind of money you only dreamed of….

The allure is easy money for doing nothing. You are told companies supply you with materials and instructions and pay you for completed work. Some ads simply say to send your name and address and you will receive free information. When you answer this request, then you are hit with a hard ball sales pitch constructed to extract up to 89.95 from you.

Some advertisers ask for the money upfront. They want your 29.95 today. And it all sounds so appealing. Heck, you are only trading 29.95 this week for 500.00 next week. What could be simpler?

Don’t fall for this type of hype. If you do, you will be a victim of Prey Parting. In other words, someone has parted you, the prey, from their money. Parting is an old swindler’s term that, terminology wise, may be out of style but financially is very much in vogue among the con artists, fraudsters and scamsters.

Headlines perform a useful service. After all, without a headline we wouldn’t know what an article or ad is all about. The text of the ad likewise performs a useful service. It tells us the story whether the subject be an advertisement or a kidnapping. Both are necessary and needed.

But, and this is a big but, if you are reading an ad, don’t fall for the glitz and glamour of the text without researching the advertiser’s pronouncements. Do your homework and ask questions before you send off any money.

And, learn to recognize the huckster from the truth sayer. Keep your eyes open and, in no time, you will recognize the chaff calling itself wheat.

So you have seen a great opportunity and are about to get started.
Where do you go from here? Before you dig in, I cannot stress enough
the importance of a well laid out business plan. You might then be asking,
how do I plan and set goals if I don’t have a clue what I’m going to achieve and in what timeframe? This may be true, but your business must have
a foundation on which to start from. You are going to start your home business because
you see the potential of this opportunity. Now, to realize this potential, you should
plan on how you are going to turn this into success.

Get your diary and write down your goals, how you are going to
achieve them and in what timeframes. Be realistic with your timeframes. Nothing
when starting out in business will happen overnight but I guarantee that the
businesses that started out with a plan achieved their goals quicker than the
others. Being distracted from your initial business goals is so very common in
today’s business world especially on the internet. It is very common for an entrepreneur
to start a business and then see other areas where the business can grow.

A common theme is an entrepreneur starting out maybe with his/her own
product website on the internet. He/She achieves a little bit of success, see’s
another avenue where the business might grow and dives in without thinking.
It might work, but the odds are against it. In the meantime his initial planned
strategy is being totally neglected of resources and time. Multiply this scenario
by 3 or 4 and you’ve got a problem. You will end up dabbling in different areas
and not totally concentrating on one.

This goes back to my earlier point, it will not happen overnight. You have to give
your business time. You will probably work the hardest and be the most frustrated
for the first 8-12 months. If you can focus on the business plan goals for this time
period, your odds for making it are much higher. Try to ignore the other opportunities
for the time being, at least until you get your business off the ground. When you get
to that stage, then the fun starts and then you can try other things knowing that you
have built a solid business which will be there to protect you if your other ideas don’t work out.

So you’ve started a home business. You went out and purchased a
nice desk and comfortable chair, and maybe even a new computer
with all of the necessary extras. Now you’re ready to earn an
income from home! How nice it will be to be your own boss, to
work when you feel like it and to answer to no one. At least
that‘s what you think.

If your business involves the internet you’re probably going to
spend a lot of time at your desk. You think your desk at work
was a mess? You have no idea. This past year was one of the
most stressful times I’ve ever experienced; mostly due to the
chaos that was my Home Office, conveniently located in my
dining room. Here is the type of scenario that played itself
out in my home on a daily basis:

‘Get up, fix coffee, take cup to desk, move slinky off desk,
let the dog out, open email, start making list of tasks to
complete, answer the phone, take a message for husband, leave
note on desk, let the dog back in, separate screaming siblings,
remember to pay phone bill, locate phone bill among the dozen or
so envelopes piled up on desk, write check, leave the prepared
bill among the remnants of the other bills, three-year-old runs
up to give Mommy a hug and spills coffee all over desk, throw
out the phone bill with the pile of trash (forgetting it’s
there in the first place) along with son’s school enrollment
paperwork that’s been lying on desk under home business
catalogs and order forms and phone message taken earlier for
husband.’

The result of my morning’s effort? Enrollment is late, phone
bill isn’t paid on time, and husband wonders if I’ll ever
regain sanity. Rewind, repeat tomorrow, next week, next month
etc.

Sound familiar? If you’re new to home business, then maybe you
haven’t yet experienced the perils of the Home Office. I think
the phrase is an oxymoron for most people. There’s very little
divide between the stuff for home and the stuff for your
business. Even if you’re lucky enough to have a separate room
for your office, I bet your family (and you too) are guilty of
leaving items or taking stuff to and from your desk. I don’t
know how many times I have looked for the three ring hole
punch, only to find it on my daughter’s art table along with
the kitchen tongs and bathroom plunger.

So you’re asking yourself, ‘How do I keep my desk organized and
my desk contents out of the hands of my family?’ Good question.
There are dozens of articles and books written to help ‘get
organized’, but if you and your family are not respectful of
the Home Office Space, then no number of organizing binders and
boxes and tabs and expanding folders will help. I tried. Really
I did. I kept finding my lovely wicker In/Out Box in my
daughter’s room, you guessed it, by the art table with the
other items she ‘borrowed.’

What finally helped my stressful Home Office situation was to
schedule a time every week to throw away old bills, to not even
bring the junk mail into the house in the first place, and to
use a simple file folder system located in my desk drawer to
keep my home business paperwork, and family papers. As far as
the littlest sneak thief - I gave my daughter her own desk
drawer full of interesting things to look at. Simple plan. Now
if I could just find that ringing telephone…!

I imagine myself getting out of a Dodge Viper wearing a three piece suit in front of my 4,000 square foot house with my wife standing in the door to greet me. We walk inside and I feel proud because my wife loves our house so much. Visualization gives you ownership of your goal and you will hold yourself accountable. Visualization is a strong tool because it will drive your wants into your subconscious mind where you make 80% of your decisions.

Now you are ready to commit to your goal. By this I mean tell any one that will listen to you what you are going to accomplish. Stand outside and shout it in the air, write it in the sand at the beach, put a big sign on that says I am a Goal Setter and a Goal Hitter. Don′t be scared of what other people think of you, people love to pull other people down to their level. Make your goal known and strive daily to move closer and closer to achieving great success.

Consulting in MLM has gotten to be a big business in Network Marketing. Being one myself, I have found that there are good ones out there, and then there are well, not so good ones. You must know what to look for, before you spend a dime with them.

Many MLM Consultants are actually Network Marketers that say they are consultants. You must understand that consulting is a career and profession that demands many things, but being a Network Marketer does NOT automatically qualify one as an expert. Even if they have had great Success in MLM, that may be due to being in the right place at the right time, with the right people. That happens in Network Marketing often.

Here are the 5 things to look for in a good MLM Consultant:

1) A Track record that is available for Inspection.

Any good consultant, no matter the industry, will keep their track record available for any kind of inspection by a future client. They have nothing to hide, nor do they want to. The results they have accomplished speak for themselves.

Ask them if they have some clients you could talk to, or get some kind of testimonial. Track records in consulting can mean the difference between spending money and getting little, or spending money and getting a lot. Check what they have DONE, not what they said they have done. You will be glad you did.

2) Check for their Credentials.

What kind of solid credentials do they have that would warrant you spending money with them? What kind of education about MLM do they have? What kind of experience do they have in Network Marketing? Do they have the right business experience? Have they ever run a business before? What kind of degree do they have if applicable?

Credentials are important in modern day consulting, and not only for you, but also for the results you seek from an MLM Consultant. Most consultants have a portfolio they can show you. Ask for it, and study it. You will be glad you did.

3) Look for Professionalism.

Professionalism is a MUST in any field of consulting. Do they come across as a professional? Do they speak as a professional? Do they communicate in a professional manner? How do they handle themselves? How do they handle other people? Do they return phone calls in an efficient manner? Do they keep their phone appointments? Are they prepared for the appointment? Do they follow up in a professional manner? Are they pushy, or have your best interests at heart? Do they come across as honest and with integrity?

Being a professional speaks well of a consultant. But here is the KEY- are they CONSISTENT in all of the above? And do they do it with a smile on their face? These questions will tell a lot about an MLM Consultant and how they will handle things in any future endeavor.

4) Do they ask questions that are focused on your problem, or questions that are focused on being a consultant?

There are many questions that consultants ask that are all part of being a consultant. You want the kind of QUESTIONS that zero in on the solution to YOUR problem, not what they have learned to ask as a rote exercise. You are looking to hire them to solve a problem, not be a consultant. Make sure their questions are focused on moving you forward, not just creating conversation.

Brutal? Yes, Honest? Totally. MLM Consultants are not cheap, and if you are going to spend money, make sure that you get what you pay for, and get your challenge resolved. That is what MLM Consultants get paid for- to solve problems, not to engage in a fruitless boiler plate exercise.

5) Have they actually spent any time working Network Marketing and understand the culture, the philosophy, and what the REAL dynamics are to create Success in a group, and an MLM company?

I am amazed that there are “consultants” out there that have never spent an hour in the MLM field. They have never recruited anyone. They have never sold a product in MLM. They have never held a Company Event for a team. They have never done a presentation around a kitchen table, or a home meeting. They have never explained an MLM Comp plan to people before, nor do they know how. But yet, they sell themselves as an MLM Consultant.

Make sure that there is SOME experience in the field, as that alone brings a wealth of knowledge that many do not have. It is not easy building a successful MLM group and business. If you have not done it, then you are coming as an MLM Consultant, from more of a position of weakness than someone who has, and can explain what it took, and how to do it. It makes a lot of difference in understanding the business of MLM as well.

Experience is a MUST and that includes also working in an MLM Company in some form. That can be as simple as being part of an ‘Inner Circle” team that was familiar with the workings of a Network marketing company. Having worked for an MLM Corporation is a big plus as well.
