I remember the first time someone spoke to me about “sorting through people”. I had to ask them to repeat what they had said. I was truly in shock that someone was suggesting I sort through people.

As a crocheter, I often sort through yarn at Walmart. My idea of sorting is looking for the right color. I’ll look and scan, and then reach deep into the barrel hoping to find just the right yarn for whatever project I am working on. Of course this means I’m tossing out those skeins I don’t believe are right for my project.

My daughter and I love to watch movies. Again at Walmart, my daughter and I can spend an hour sorting through the DVD sale bin. We toss aside those movies we already have or don’t wish to purchase and we put the ones we do want into our shopping cart.

This is my idea of “sorting”. So when I heard the word sort in reference to people I actually flinched a bit. I just could not imagine choosing only the “best” people and tossing aside the others.

As the years have passed, I’ve asked others exactly what they mean by “sorting through people”. Very few people even know what this means. They just know they’ve been taught this phrase and so they use it.

I’ve had a few folks that have told me they are indeed looking for “just the right person” to join their team.

Of course my next question is “what does the right person look like?” Again, I very seldom receive an answer. Is the right person tall? Is the right person short? How old is the right person? Is the right person single or married?

A few times I’ve been told “I’m looking for those who are serious about earning money”. Me, being a person of many questions, will then ask “how are you judging serious?” What word or phrase or answer must a person give to you to have you convinced they are “serious?”

Remember, my interpretation of “sorting” is looking for something specific and then tossing aside what I don’t want. The thought of doing this with people is a concept I just find to be horrible.

I really believe that almost everyone has something they can offer both to you and to your business. Instead of “sorting” through people the next time you’re looking for folks to work with, why not instead look inside and ask what you personally have to offer to the very person you’ve just met.

4. Starting Capital

Many members of MLM start their involvement in the MLM companies to find a new additional income source while still maintaining their primary job or profession. Many of them who later on succeed in their MLM business leave their primary job which gives them secure and stable but a lot smaller income. So, many MLM members start their MLM business by allocating some of their regular income as starting capital. Start small and be wise with your budget. Never spend more than you can afford, especially when you are in the process of learning. Don’t make yourself hate and speak bad about MLM when you fail in your first endeavor in the MLM business. Again, when you join any MLM company, always remember that you are stepping into the world of independent entrepreneurship. My wife and I will be leaving North Carolina in about seven hours to visit my son in New Jersey. I would rather stay home and work on the computer, but I know my son is looking forward to our visit. Not only is my son excited about our visit my wife is excited also.

You may be wondering what this has to do with marketing, I’m getting to that. My son and my wife aren’t the only people excited about the trip. You see I thought I would make someone else happy so I decided to take my grand daughter with us to see her cousins.

I need to tell you about the relationship my grand daughter and I have. When she comes to visit me she tells me she doesn′t love me, when she leaves she refuses to say bye to me. Now I know she is just playing, but guess what she said when I called her and asked if she wanted to go to New Jersey with me and see her cousin. She said yes, but just before giving the phone back to her mother she said grand daddy I love you.

Can you see the marketing lesson here? Give someone what they want and they in return are happy to give you what you want in the case of my grand daughter I didn’t even have to ask. Of course I didn’t decide to take her with us to get anything I just wanted to make her happy, but just seeing her happy is getting something because it makes me feel good.

That is just a small marketing lesson, but since Thanksgiving and Christmas are near wouldn’t it be nice if we all tried to just make each other happy, it takes so little and pays back so much. I will be making seven people happy this Thanksgiving and by making them happy they may go out and make another seven people happy.

You know we don’t live forever and when the time comes for me to go I think I will be able to go with peace knowing I left some happiness in the world.

Wherever you start your new prospects will duplicate throughout your business. Plain and simple, it is best for your new people to start at the top package. Some companies don’t offer a top package so create one, that’s what I did. Why did I direct people to start with a significant amount of product? So that they could go out and create a story right away. The most important thing for your brand new person is for them to make money. When a new person starts with $1,000 worth of product to market, the goal is for that product to be moved within 1-2 weeks. They have now turned a profit of $4-500. That would be their story. You have to set people up so that they can succeed.
