Running Your Own Online Business:Getting Started

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

So, you are thinking of building your own online business? The idea of running your own business on the Net is a right decision. It will bring you a sense of independence and accomplishment and you will be the boss. Now, you can experience that pride of ownership you have always craved. But you need to understand what it takes to be an online entrepreneur (a netpreneur, that is) and how different it is from doing business offline, even though there are fundamental similarities between the two.

*What Makes Online Business tick? *

Consumers often buy on the Internet for four reasons, which have come to be known as the 4Cs:

Convenience: You can visit a website and order from among thousands of displayed products without going through the hassles of traffic or standing in store checkout lines.

Choice: Consumers can avail themselves of numerous websites for almost any product or service, compare prices and quality levels and pick the right choice.

Customization: Do you remember that e-mail from a book club (to which you subscribed only a few days ago) began with “Hi, your first name”? Online marketers often target and customize their messages, such that customization of marketing replaces anonymous transactions. Such customization has the potential of growing into more interactive relationships with consumers, which are built over time. Beyond this, consumers also sometimes have the opportunity to customize products, services and experiences for themselves, when they buy on the Net.

Control: Online transactions have been known to give consumers control over the purchase decision process. For instance, you may decide to either click on the “yes, sign me on” tab on a pop up window, or the “No, thanks” option and continue with your shopping on the Net. Consumers, like never before, can make purchase decisions on their own terms and conditions.

Add these to the fact that the Internet is all about millions of computers wired to one another across the world with people hunched up in front of monitors, trying to find information or buy something they need most at that time and you have one of the biggest markets ever imagined, at your feet. Again, when you consider the opportunity of receiving instant payment for your products or services on the Net, you may need to ask why you never considered setting up your own online business, all this while. But wait a minute…

*You need a Roadmap*

Yes. After all, you wouldn’t travel to a city the first time, without preparing yourself with a map to guide you through. Putting a business plan together for your new online venture is not only important, but also necessary.

Not necessarily an expansive hundred page treatise that looks like the “7 Immutable Laws of Evolution”, your business plan should be brief, easy to understand and flexible enough to adapt on a day-to-day basis, to the changing culture of the internet.

Remember Intel’s first business plan was on one page and Sun MicroSystems’ was just three pages. Your business plan should basically answer the following questions:

Where Am I now? This will include some background on your saleable talent, product or service (e.g. if you know a lot about public speaking, your best bet may be to establish an online business that teaches people, including business executives, how to make effective public speeches). Apart from a checklist of your strengths, you should also consider your weaknesses. If you cannot build your own website, for instance, you may need to hire a Webmaster. Other factors you need to consider here include competition. How many online businesses are selling the kind of product you want to sell, how have they been going about it, how large is the market and how can you differentiate your own offering? Again, what opportunities and threats are there in the market right now? If you find out that a particular segment of consumers are not presently being well serviced by your competitors, this is an opportunity within the market and it means you should target that segment. On the other hand, the increasing prices of courier services could be a threat (which may eventually affect your pricing and profitability), especially if your online business has to deliver physical products (such as Audio CD ROMs, e.t.c.) to customers by courier. This may inform changing your initial distribution strategy by making such product downloadable to a customer’s PC.

Where do I want to go? In other words, what are the goals of your online business? This should be a clear, concise statement of where you are headed. It should state where your online business would be in 3-5 years time. Your objectives should always be measurable and quantifiable. They should state what you are trying to achieve, such as to achieve a minimum sales target of ABC and a profit of XYZ, every year.

How do I get there? You need to consider which customers you will target and how. How much do you need to set up a website, what kind of website is most suitable for your kind of business and which Webmaster will you hire? How do you process orders, payment and delivery to customers?

In all, your business plan should contain a description of the business, a marketing plan, a financial management plan and an operational plan. If you need help writing a business plan, help yourself with some tips at www.bcentral.com/articles/businessplan .

*You can Sell Anything*

You’d better believe it. The Internet offers tremendous opportunities and advantages to anyone who has a quality product, service or business idea, as long as he is willing to invest some time, effort and, maybe, money.

You can sell anything on the Net that can be of value to other people. This includes your knowledge, life experience, specialized interest or hobby, which can be packaged into an information product such as an e-book, for other people to buy. Don’t forget people are constantly looking for information to improve their lives and businesses, or just to reassure them that they are not alone in their downside moments.

Again, apart from selling your own products or services, you can sell other people’s information products or software, by becoming an affiliate marketer.

As an affiliate, you earn commissions by sending (or referring) prospects to a merchant’s website, that you are representing. If they make any purchases, the merchant pays you a commission. Affiliate Marketing has been described as the easiest way to make an entry into online business. You can build your business in no time and at minimal risk, by becoming the middleman between prospects and a merchant. This is done by marketing the merchant’s product and driving customer traffic to his website. The merchant does the rest. He supplies every other thing like excellent products, order and credit card processing, delivery, e.t.c.

Even when you sell your own products, you can always expand the scope of your business and increase earnings by making use of affiliates who will help do the marketing bit and drive constant traffic to your website. Unfortunately, a lot of netpreneurs do not exploit this fantastic opportunity.

*Want to Really Get Started?*

Well, I will recommend two definitive resources on the web right now, for people like you who want to make it big as online entrepreneurs (sorry, Netpreneurs). One is Sitesell’s “Make Your Knowledge Sell” which has been described as the complete “infopreneur’s toolkit” and contains helpful solutions on how you can develop and sell your own proprietary product on the Net. Check it up at myks.sitesell.com/net_hunting.html.

The other one is Corey Rudl’s “Insider Secrets to Marketing Your Business on the Internet”, which contains in-depth information on how to start, build and run a successful online business. This package comes as two beefy 3-ring binders and 2 CD ROMs, containing tested and proven fast-growth strategies which Rudl has personally used to grow his own one-man Internet business into a $7.6 million enterprise. You will find this at www.marketingtips.com/t.cgi/840099.

In the follow-up to this article, you will get to know the various ways by which you can generate credibility for your online business, why you should differentiate your business through branding and which promotions will help you make the most sales. Happy netpreneurship!

So You Want To Make Money Over The Web - Really?

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

Doing business over the web has many advantages. First of all you have got a round the clock business. Secondly your business is no longer confined by your location. But what I consider the greatest thing of all is the freedom you enjoy. You can work and earn from the coolness of your home. No superiors, nobody to ask you questions: a really free bird you are. In this article I will try to introduce the concepts of five kinds of websites you can easily design. The Ideas are so general that anybody can adapt it to your taste and improvise. Your creative talents and imagination can implement these ideas with an unlimited number of variations, giving you a wide range of opportunities. I do not discuss techniques of generating traffic and building an income from these sites. That will be told separately.

1. Place or location sites:
Tourists all over the world are eager to get up-to-date information on places they want to visit. People of a place are generally anxious to know about things happening around them. So if you can make a site on a particular location, your neighbourhood or a place nearby or even a distant place likes London it will be a good idea. Only thing is that you should search for and find useful information which is not available elsewhere. Generally such sites have a static part and a dynamic part .Static part deals with content that change slowly, while dynamic part deals with events and even creative thoughts that are updated frequently . Using a good combination of both can help you win the hearts of many. We discuss place sites in a separate article

2. Fan sites:

Sites centred on great personalities is attracting many people. The main advantage of these types of sites is that you do not have to go out for information. A good search on internet will often result in thousands of sites about the personality. Then what is your job? You have to arrange the information in your own way that people find the content you provide more interesting and well organised. Also you can interpret the facts in your own way and arrive at interesting conclusions. If the person is alive options are much more wider and a little research may make your site unique. Again the many ways of generating income from a fan site will be discussed separately.

3. Theme sites:

These are more general than the first two. Here we concentrate on a particular theme and build a site around it. The theme can be anything, like chess or fashion or movies or anything imaginable. You can provide interesting facts about the subject, History of the theme, current status, interviews, controversies and what not!! As I have mentioned earlier this is a place you can display your ingenuity and original thinking.

4. Trade sites:
Trading has a long history. Everybody wants to buy or sell something. This is the relevance of trade sites. These sites provide a global market place for buyers and sellers. You can choose any type of item to sell and allow people to add items to your site. This will be initially free but later a fee may be imposed. Trade site can be constructed in a variety of ways, and closely related are matrimonial and job sites. Again the options are limited only by your imagination.

5. Community sites:
Often people of a community or institution or company, want a common place to interact and exchange ideas. Also there may be many people and institutions that constantly interact with this community. The official website of the community will have always limitations. Imagine the barber nearer to your company trying to interact with the employees through the official website. So an unofficial website of the community has high potential of attracting viewers from and outside the community. Selling and buying inside the group is also a possibility. Again possibilities and variations are endless.

In this short exposure I have tried to identify five areas where you can build a website with minimal expertise. Your comments on these topics are always welcome. Also if you want help or consultancy in building a profitable web business feel free to contact me.

Home Business Buzz - In Business For Your Kids, And With Them!

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

Many moms (and dads!) get involved in a Network Marketing business so they can spend more time with their kids and then find that the business is taking away more time then it’s giving back. Being WAHM’s (Work At Home Moms) we sometimes get so focused on the goal of making it work we forget that the goal is to free up our time so we are free to do the fun things like get to the soccer games, school events and all the things busy working moms don’t have time for.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

If you find that your business is taking too much time away from your most important reason for doing the business then take some time to think about how you can get your kids involved in your business.

Getting them involved will do at least three things:

- Allow you to spend more time together, which is really the goal, right?

- Teach your child the value of being an entrepreneur.
- Boost self-confidence and teach the importance of working for things you really desire.

Getting the kids involved doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are some ideas:

- If you do craft shows or fairs, let the kids come along. They will have tons of fun and often your kids will not be afraid to really let people know what everything is about and ask if they want to buy something!

- Let them do up your mailings. Putting on stamps and labels and folding papers into envelopes are easy things for kids to do.

- If you have great products then let your kids know about them, and how they work. My son loves having a look at what new candles we have and he also likes to hand out a free votive to people he knows to help promote the products.

The important thing to remember here is this is your business and your life. Network Marketing allows you incredible control over how you run your business and involving the kids is a fantastic way to work the business around you and your values!

Gaining Traffic to Your Site

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

Once your website is up and running, it’s time to start building traffic. This is achievable through various methods. However, many scrapbook online business owners grow discouraged and want to give up too soon before they apply enough sweat equity.

Gaining traffic to your website is a process that requires much time and effort on your part. It isn’t something that you can sit back and wait to happen. Creating a website and putting it online does not ensure that you will pull in the traffic, and essentially the customers, that you need to keep your business growing.

A popular advertising method right now is article marketing. Article marketing is so trendy because it’s the best form of online advertising—free. You simply write quality articles about all kinds of scrapbooking topics, together with a link to your website in your bio. Then submit these articles to free article directories. Your articles are then read and picked up by other publishers looking for quality content.

Another way to pull in website traffic is to leave comments on scrapbooking blogs. Don’t “spam” the blog by leaving a short, “Hi, visit me at…” message. Take the time to read the content or surf through the blog first. Then leave a comment on a recent entry, along with a link to your website.

Forums are another good way to share your link and get website traffic. Join some of the more popular scrapbooking forums. Get involved in the online community, offering advice or help to beginning scrapbookers. Most forums allow you to create a customized signature line, in which your website address can be added.

Most importantly, stay active online. The best way to promote your online scrapbook business and gain more traffic to your site is to network and be seen. Get your name out there!

Eliminate Your Health Care Headaches With A PEO!

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

There are many complications to being a small business owner but none so pressing as the need for health, dental and life insurance. Many small business owners obtain coverage through the employment of their spouse. However, there are just as many small business owners who are not married, whose spouse is also self employed or not offered benefits through their employer.

Another option for a small business owner is to partner with a Professional Employer Organization (PEO). PEO’s, also known as employee leasing companies, handle the human resources functions of companies of any size but they focus primarily on small and medium sized businesses. Some of the human resources functions handled by a typical PEO are:

Payroll

Direct Deposit

Worker’s Compensation Insurance

Health Insurance

Dental Insurance

Life Insurance

Retirement Plans

Tax Deposits and Reporting

Regulatory Compliance

A PEO groups together businesses of all sizes in order to get the best rates for benefits and to reduce human resources costs to a minimum. In order to work with a PEO you will be asked to fill out an application and provide a set-up fee ranging from $50.00 to $300.00 depending upon the size of your business. Monthly fees will be determined by the PEO and are usually based on the number of payroll checks issued during each month and the number of employees. Your company will be billed, at least monthly, for the cost of fees, benefits, taxes, etc. not paid by employees.

After signing a contract with a PEO your employees will need to fill out employment and tax forms that will then be forwarded to the PEO. The PEO then becomes the employer of record for the employees and from then on handles all payroll and benefit tasks. Timesheets, benefit enrollments and changes will all be submitted to your PEO and you will receive regularly scheduled management reports. At the end of a calendar year the PEO will provide all employees with a W-2.

Some PEO’s work with companies in every state and others are state specific. You can find individual PEO’s by using a search engine such as Google. You can save time by using the free services of a PEO clearinghouse such as www.StaffMarket.com. You can also find a SEO by visiting The National Association of Professional Employers Association (NAPEO) at napeo.org″ target=”_new napeo.org. NAPEO offers a directory of members searchable by company name, state or country and offers guidelines to help you screen and select a PEO.

A PEO may not be the perfect solution for every small business but it is an option for individuals and companies who are willing to outsource human resource functions to obtain much needed benefits, improve employee retention and save time that can be better used to growing the business.

Turn No’s Into Yes

Monday, June 26th, 2006

How do you overcome the fear of rejection in network marketing? With success. Simple enough? What is success? It’s turning those no’s into yes’es. Here are 7 tips for turning no’s into yes’es.

1. Keep Asking.

Ask and you shall receive is not only good spiritual advice. It is good practical advice. You have not because you ask not is very true for many. Why won’t we ask? Mostly because of fear of rejection and low self-esteem or self-worth. However, it is proven that even when people initially refuse what you have to offer, if you ask enough, they will buy. By mere persistence a widow wore down the resistance of a cold-hearted judge who granted her request

Most sales are made after the seventh request. That means it’s a numbers game. Most people quit asking after the second attempt. Therefore they never reach their potential. Assume the attitude that “no″ means “not now” or “not in this manner.” Give it some time and space. Sometimes a new event, incident or experience will create a change that makes the offer favorable or desirable.

2. Change Your Approach

Some requests are too direct. A novice without offering a presentation or explanation may say, “Buy this now.” The prospect immediately goes into sales shock. When animals of prey hunt, they do not pounce out into an open field. They qualify and stalk their prey. They may follow a herd for miles before they attack. When they do they make every effort count. Take the time to learn the best approach for each prospect. Adapt the presentation as necessary to the timing, circumstance and personality of the prospect. Have a plan A and plan B for back-up or for the next opportunity. Leave the door open. Remember its okay to close in stages. Get them reading the material, listening to audios, watching the DVDs or sampling the product. Then make a second appointment. Be flexible.

3. Get Out of Your Own Way

Sometimes you may not be the best person to close a certain individual. For some reason there is a mental, psychological or other block between you and the prospect. Lay your ego aside and get a neutral 3rd party involved. Use your upper support line, sideline or even downline when the talent and credibility is there.

4. Provide More Information

Remember, the prospect has not been exposed to your product or service as you have. They have not received the training to be aware of all its features and benefits. Continue to feed them information without attempting to sell.

5. Look for the Aha

Usually when providing information, the prospect will cue you on their “go” button. This is when they get that huge “aha.” For some it happens after reviewing your information or viewing your DVDs. It could be after they attend a formal presentation or when someone else makes a stronger case. Perhaps a personal experience by themselves or with someone closer to them creates the aha.

6. Get More No’s.

One of the easiest ways to turn a no into yes is to get more no’s. The average person will close one sale for every 10 presentations. Let’s say each sale is worth $100. That means that each no is worth $10. So, for each no you get, you make $10. Want to make $200? Talk to 20 people. Set your goal to get 100 no’s as quickly as possible. By the time you reach that goal if ever, you may be earning more money than you now dream possible. Why? Because of the law of averages. If you persist, you should eventually get better and start closing 1 out of 4. That means each no is worth $25.00 You just got a raise! From that point on, its easy, fun and predictable.

7. Help People Get What They Want

Keep your eyes and ears open to what people are looking for and help them get it. Do not be concerned if it has nothing to do with your product or service. Help others to succeed. It always come back to you. Help enough other people get what they want, and you can get what you want. Do not be surprised when they return and ask to purchase your product or service. Give and you shall receive.

Master the Art to Track Down Easy Work from Home Ideas

Monday, June 26th, 2006

Ever heard of the song “Everyone’s a winner babe”? This could very well be a song 100% written for you. Let me guess, you have been surfing the internet for the so called “Easy Work from Home Ideas″ and every time when you did a search through the search engines, you ran in to the same meaningless sales letters filled with empty promises. Well, there’s a surprise!

You need to understand that for anybody owning a web site it is extremely important to get a high ranking in the search engines and those web pages you see are only made to do just that. The people behind those web sites make a small fortune just by selling there “make money work at home” idea. Unfortunately, you probably wont make that kind of money.

What is that you say? I started of this article with, how to track down easy work from home ideas, and have not said a word about that yet. You are right, let’s do that now then shall we.

If you are so eager to work from home on line, why not sell your own products. This might sound difficult but it doesn′t have to be.

First you want to find out what to sell, i mean you need to know if there is an buying audience for your product. This you can do by going to inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ here you can fill in any given keyword and it will show you how often there was searched for this keyword. The higher the number the better. What you want to think of though is that you want a buying audience, therefore pick the words which indicate just that.

Then you simply go to wordtracker.com/free-trial.html and fill in the keywords which you found earlier. This program will show you several things, the most important one is how much competition there is for your keywords. After a while you will have found some keywords which have a good amount of searches and a low number of competitors.

Congratulations, that’s how simple it is for anybody to easily find good work from home ideas. It might take you some time to find these kind of keywords and I would strongly suggest to start of with filling in any word you can come up with. Perhaps keywords which are closely connected with your hobbies, or at least something which you find interesting. Let’s face it, if all goes well this will be something you will be doing full time in the future so why not make it fun.

In my next article I will tell you how to use these new ideas to build and promote your very own money making web site so better make sure to check back here or in my weblog for that article.

Why Do You Want To Start A Work At Home Business?

Monday, June 26th, 2006

This should be among the very first questions you ask yourself. What are the pros versus the cons of starting your own home based business? So, with that in mind, why do you want to start your own work from home business? Start up costs are relatively cheap and the tax breaks are great but the long hours and little pay in the beginning seem hardly worth it.

On the other hand, driving to and from work in the dark sometimes 6 days a week, having a boss who is less than appreciative of your efforts, and co-workers who need a babysitter or to be in daycare instead of a full time job appeals to all of us a lot less!

Have you decided which one you want to be or have you settled for something less? Have you given up on yourself, your dreams, or are you just chalking them up to being unattainable pipe dreams?

Here’s another bold statement – “No one deserves success”. Success, if to be enjoyed must be earned. Everyone has a gift. Only you can unlock it so, what’s holding you back?

When I was a child, I spent my summers with my best friend at his parent’s lake house. If the weather was good we would all go swimming – but not without me putting on an entire production about venturing into the water. My friends would run down the pier and “splash”, jump right in.

I on the other hand, would run down the pier with the best of intentions and when I reached the end would suddenly stop and stick only my big toe into the water! This went on for 5 or 6 attempts until I could convince myself that I wasn’t going to die. The anxiety and fear I felt literally had a death grip on me.

Business is no different for the burgeoning entrepreneur. Venturing out on your own is not without certain real apprehensions. Fear of failure, the uncertainty of what lies ahead and forcing yourself to get out of your comfort zone can be crippling if left unchecked.

You need to actively seek inside you that which helps you to be better than the sum of your parts. Everyone wants better for themselves but it’s those few whose drive is so intense and their dreams so real that they will be enjoying the success that they have yearned for.

The biggest obstacle in life that you’ll ever face is YOU! Write down and realize your fears. It’s only when you realize them for what they are can you deal with and overcome them. The freedom you’ll feel will be overwhelming.

Fear will be replaced with a sense of accomplishment and pride as you grow your chosen business but take care not to rest on your laurels – build upon them and take your business to the next level.

For me, the freedom and ability to do more with my life was the real appeal. I knew I had more to offer than what could be appreciated in a more traditional job atmosphere.

What will be your motivating factor? For each of us the answer will be different but it’s a questions that we must ask and answer for it alone will provide the base upon which we will build our business.

How To Join The 5% Of Internet Business Real Money Making Pro’s Regardless Of The Products You Sell

Monday, June 26th, 2006

On the Internet business world today, you’ve probably heard that only an estimated 5% of netpreneurs, webmasters, or affiliates, are making any real money. If you’re not one of them, then read on and learn how you can make it too.

So, who are the real money makers? What they’re doing that you’re not, or doing it differently?

Is it because they’re selling a high in-demand product from their own websites? Or, only referring prospects to an affiliate merchant partner? Is it because they’re selling to a tight niche or to a broader market segment? And if so, would the difference strive in different marketing campaigns?

Whatever be your answers, they are either all wrong or all right, depending on the nature of your business, the product or service itself, the marketing methods, and the lead generation. The variables could be infinite within each context.

Whatever be the reasons, two things stands out as common denominators among internet money makers. One, solid knowledge base about doing business on the net; the other, the business, marketing, and traffic generations used to support their success.

That’s true, regardless of the product or service they’re selling, either as webmasters or affiliates, and whether it’s to a niche or a broad market.

The successful netprenuer’s, either selling products of their own or as affiliates, have (a) a website that really sells, (b) set up an automated search engine traffic generating system (c) designing and automating multiple marketing campaigns according to the nature of their business, products, or markets; and (d) set up a database automation system for customer service, and to follow up on their prospects to explode their back end sales

If you’re not getting the anticipated desired results with your internet business, that doesn’t mean you can’t be one of the elite–you just need to arm yourself with the right knowledge and tools that will allow you to strive and compete successfully.

The flexibility and freedom of an online business may seem very appealing, but for most, reality isn’t nearly so rosy. Even so, people still dream about quitting their jobs and heading on to making a living with an internet business of their own. That is because of one word: possibilities.

We′ve all thought the same thing. However, along with the hazards and potential for failure, comes a very real and distinct light at the end of the tunnel. What if you could be part of that 5% who are making a great living? Isn′t it worth a shot? Yes!

So, with a 5% success rate, how do you improve your chances? Doing as the big hitters do. First …

Learning the Pro’s insiders secrets to setup your internet business; and

How-to marketing online-offline your business, products or services.

Becoming familiar with the nature of your business, products.

Defining your market, global or local, and how to reach it.

Identifying your products benefits and your unique selling proposition.

Learning basic and advance copy-writing techniques.

Building, optimizing, and re-submitting content focused web(site) pages
